This week I’m in conversation with Dave Oberle of that most unique progressive folk band, Gryphon! Hear some of our chat and lots of great Gryphon music!
Gryphon formed in early 1973 as a four-piece band by English musicians Graeme Taylor (above seated), Richard Harvey, Dave Oberlé (above standing), and Brian Gulland. Harvey and Gulland were graduates of the Royal College of Music in London who started an acoustic band, using their classically-trained backgrounds to perform a mixture of English folk music, contemporary rock, medieval and Renaissance music. The duo were joined by guitarist Graeme Taylor and drummer Dave Oberlé shortly after, thus becoming the first line-up of Gryphon.
Gryphon enjoyed several years of success in the mid-1970s and produced five studio albums. They disbanded in 1977. Surprisingly, they have reunited in the present century and recorded an album of new material more than 40 years after what was assumed to be their last album in 1977. The new album is aptly titled Reinvention, and carries on the unique musical legacy of the band.
