This week on Prog-Watch my very special guest is Dave Oberlé of Gryphon! Tune in to hear some of our chat about the band and the making of their latest album ‘Get Out Of My Father’s Car’. Along the way I will of course be spinning some great Gryphon music…some classics from the 1970s, and some future classics from their most recent albums, including a few from the new one!
Gryphon formed in early 1973 as a four-piece band by English musicians Graeme Taylor, Richard Harvey, Dave Oberlé, and Brian Gulland. Harvey and Gulland were graduates of the Royal College of Music in London who started an acoustic band, using their classically-trained backgrounds to perform a mixture of English folk music, contemporary rock, medieval and Renaissance music. The duo were joined by guitarist Graeme Taylor and drummer Dave Oberlé shortly after, thus becoming the first line-up of Gryphon.
Gryphon enjoyed several years of success in the mid-1970s and produced five studio albums. They disbanded in 1977. Surprisingly, they have reunited in the present century and recorded two albums of new material more than 40 years after what was assumed to be their last album in 1977…the aptly titled ‘Reinvention’ and their latest ‘Get Out of my Father’s Car!’ which carry on the unique musical legacy of the band.
